Oneonta is also nicknamed “City of the Hills” because of a prominent geological formation known as “tablerocks” in the western end of Oneonta. Although the origin of the name “Oneonta” is undetermined, it is popularly believed that the name meant “place of open rocks” in Iroquois. Major establishments located in Oneonta include the National Soccer Hall of Fame, State University of New York at Oneonta, Hartwick College, and the Oneonta Tigers baseball club of the New York-Penn League. The city is served served by the Oneonta Municipal Airport located just north of the city.

Around 1775, early pioneers began to arrive in the area after moving out of the Hudson Valley. The first hamlet was established around 1800 and was named “Milfordville.” In 1830, the town of Oneonta was formed and in 1832, Milfordville was renamed Oneonta. In 1848, the region previously known as Milfordville was incorporated as a village within the town. Once the Delaware and Hudson Railroad extended into the area, the town experience much growth and development as Oneonta became a railroad center, once being home to the largest locomotive roundhouse in the world. By 1908, the town was incorporated as the city of Oneonta.

Located in the Central  Region of New York State, the City of Oneonta can be characterized as a friendly community — one that is proud of its diversity, stability and beauty. With a population of just under 13,999 people, one of the City’s finest attributes is its small town atmosphere. Residents and visitors alike are attracted to Oneonta because of its friendliness, its reputation as a great place to raise a family, its safety, and the overall perception that it is a oriented family community.

Oneonta’s Main Street complements the small town ambiance. Red brick sidewalks and turn of the century style street lamps suggest the disarming feel of a simpler era.  Main Street is the heart of the retail shopping industry in the City and offers a wide range of shopping options mostly centered on locally owned and operated specialty shops. The new Main Street Plaza and the many elegant and comfortable benches beckon tourists and shoppers to slow their hurried pace; to relax and take in the Spirit of Oneonta’s  downtown and to engage the panorama of century old architecture and timeless.
