Oneonta's
Main Street complements the small town ambiance. Red brick
sidewalks and turn of the century style street lamps suggest the
disarming feel of a simpler, more genteel era. Main Street's
many elegant and comfortable benches beckon shoppers to slow
their hurried pace; to relax and take in the ambiance of
Oneonta's Rockwellesque downtown and to engage the panorama of
century old architecture and timeless rolling hills. The City of
Oneonta's downtown area is an ecclectic mix of commerical,
residential, professional and health and government service
uses. The downtown area has evolved through the years from
a retail center to a center of commercial diversity. |

Where is Downtown Oneonta?
The "downtown" area has been
defined as being within the area of Market Street from the corner of
Main and Fairview Streets to James Georgeson
(former Gas Avenue); Main Street just north of the viaduct turning west
on Chestnut Street to the former P&C plaza (now Dollar General, Video
store, tanning salon), including the United Methodist Church; Huntington
Park turning north along Dietz Street to Walnut Street, which serves as
Downtown's northern border; and Main Street to the Maple Street/Lettis
Highway intersection.

What Improvements Have Been Made to Downtown Oneonta?
In the 1980's a concentrated
effort was made to encourage the acquisition and redevelopment of vacant
buildings and convert vacant upper floors of commercial buildings to
housing. This action has increased the number of downtown
residents and has also provided the downtown area with a readily
available consumer base.
The City has undertaken a number of studies and
improvement projects to improve the downtown area since 1990. Most
recently upgrades have been done to the Water Street area that included
facade, parking garage, business assistance and streetscape
improvements. The City has also demolished the former West-Nesbitt
Feed Mill and is now the home of the offices of the Foothills Performing
Arts Center, with additional construction planned as funds become
available. These projects have had a major positive impact on
Oneonta's downtown area and has helped to create an atmosphere of growth
and optimism for future downtown development. |
